Kurt HOSTETTMANN studied chemistry, culminating in a doctoral thesis in science at the University of Neuchâtel. Passionate about plants, he continued his training at Columbia University in New York. Subsequently, he held a position at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, while teaching at the University of Neuchâtel and that of Friborg. Since 1981, he has been Full Professor at the University of Lausanne and Director of the Institute of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry. In 2004, its institute was transferred to the University of Geneva. He is interested in the active principles of plants used in traditional medicine. He is the author of more than 450 scientific publications and fifteen books, including one written in English, has been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian and Spanish. He has also published four books intended for the general public and appeared in several television shows. He has received numerous scientific distinctions, the latest of which are the title of Honorary Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai in 2002, Honorary Doctorate from the University of Toulouse and Honorary Professor at the University of Panama in 2003, and honorary professor at Shandong University in Jinan (China) in February 2005. In December 2005, Prof. Hostettmann was elected as a foreign correspondent member at the Académie Nationale de Pharmacy de Paris.

Currently, Kurt is spending his retirement years in a pretty mountain village in Champex-Lac.

Il en reste des souvenirs inoubliables, maintenant que je suis à la retraite. Ceci depuis octobre 2009. Je me suis établi dans le charmant village des Alpes valaisannes, Champex-Lac. Retraite active puisque je donne encore de nombreux cours, surtout de formation continue, des conférences pour le grand public. J’organise des balades pharmaco-botaniques dans ma belle région. J’ai une rubrique bimensuelle à la RTS La Première, le dimanche matin et … j’écris des livres et j’espère qu’ils seront encore nombreux ! J’ai reçu de nombreuses distinctions scientifiques, dont voici la liste non-exhaustive :

En 29 ans d’enseignement universitaire, plus de 1500 étudiants en pharmacie ont suivi mes cours et passé les examens avec moi. Septante doctorants ont fait leur thèse sous ma direction, pas uniquement des Suisses, mais aussi des chercheurs venus de France, de Chine, du Canada, du Brésil, du Cameroun, de la Côte d’Ivoire, du Congo ( Kinshasa ), de l'Algérie, de l'Île Maurice, du  Mali et de Madagascar.

J’ai aussi accueilli dans mon laboratoire des professeurs invités, des post-doctorants et des stagiaires due nombreux pays différents ( Chine, Iran, Thaïlande, Indonésie, Vietnam, Norvège, Finlande, Algérie, Maroc, Rwanda, Kénya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Ethiopie, Afrique du Sud, Brésil, Mexique, Pérou, Polynésie française). Quant à moi, j’ai parcouru le monde entier pour donner des cours et des conférences, de l'Ethiopie à l’Afrique du Sud, du Canada au Chili, de Tahiti à Nouméa en passant par Hawai , Bangkok, Shanghai, Hanoi, Singapour, Hong-Kong, Sydney.
